Palestine24 – Gaza Palestinians in Gaza City held a mass funeral on Sunday morning for the bodies and remains of 75 people killed in the war, recovered by Civil Defense crews from beneath the rubble of destroyed homes and buildings in the Al-Daraj neighborhood, northeast of the city, after rescue teams had been unable to reach them for an extended period. The funeral took place amid scenes of grief, attended by families who had waited for years to recover and bury their loved ones, following the widespread destruction caused by the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. On Saturday evening, the families gathered to bid their final farewells to the bodies and remains. Recovery operations had faced major obstacles due to accumulated rubble and a shortage of heavy machinery and equipment needed to clear debris. Civil Defense teams continue searching for missing people beneath destroyed buildings across the Gaza Strip, despite limited technical and logistical resources and difficulties accessing some damaged sites. Previous Civil Defense estimates indicate that between 8,000 and 10,000 bodies remain buried under the rubble. Rescue operations are hampered by shortages of equipment, while identifying some of the recovered remains is particularly difficult because DNA testing equipment is unavailable. The Al-Daraj funeral followed the recovery of the remains of 105 people from the Burj Al-Taj area of the Al-Yarmouk neighborhood in early October, 28 people from beneath the ruins of a home belonging to the Abu Naama family in Al-Daraj in late September, and more than 130 people from the Abu Sharia and Al-Hasayneh families in the Al-Sabra neighborhood of southern Gaza City. The ongoing recovery operations and funerals highlight the suffering of thousands of Palestinian families still waiting to retrieve the remains of relatives buried beneath the rubble, amid an urgent need for specialized equipment and rescue teams capable of completing search and recovery efforts.
